Why does Arjen have an organic farm? “The transition to an organic company actually has its origins in the years after the land consolidation in 1970 – 1975. Due to a declining interest in horticulture, islands were left fallow. I plowed some of these fallow islands and started growing cabbage on them. The cultivation on these plots was significantly less affected by diseases than the islands that had not been fallow. That brought the insight into how important crop rotation is. Moreover, I sometimes forgot to spray those fields and when I went to check, the weeds were not that bad. Because the cabbage had grown large and wide, the weeds simply had no room. It was actually a very logical step.”
